The Sr. Compute/vCloud Systems Engineer will perform a variety of assignments associated with Compute Hardware (virtual and physical) and virtualization software (VMware’s vSphere, vCloud and View) on a set of enterprise-level IT systems in support of SAIC’s production data center environment.
- Acts as the Subject Matter Expert and lead engineer for the system and service offering into production.
- Accountable for understanding the full architecture supporting the system and service provided to enterprise customers.
- Responsible for all Capacity and Availability Management per ITIL v3 associated with the service (trending and monitoring to insure health of infrastructure).
- Defines where infrastructure action is “required” to sustain the current service offering of existing functionality and align with ITS Strategy and Architecture Technical Reference Model. (Service Continuity)
- Accountable for evaluating the impact of proposed changes to the service (either via projects, initiatives, or releases); identifying and evaluating risks and responses and making recommendations to the Service Manager and Service Delivery Manager regarding whether changes should be approved. Changes may be presented in the form of Service Design Packages and other relevant project/service change information from other Lead Engineers on projects or systems.
- Leads troubleshooting of service issues and makes recommendations regarding their resolution.
- Leads and performs change evaluations when requested by Service Managers or Service Delivery Managers.
- Provides engineering guidance to systems administration team as required to support O&M activities.
Engineering exists as one of the Centers of Expertise within the ITS Organization. The Centers of Expertise provide key staff on a matrix basis to support IT Service Management and project initiatives. The Systems Engineer for Financial Systems reports into the Lead Systems Engineering Manager. The Systems Engineer is matrixed to the Service Delivery Managers and Project Managers for assigned systems and project activities; collaborates and partners with other members of ITS to enable realization of successful systems.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
- A minimum of a Bachelor's degree coupled with 7+ years related experience; OR an Associate’s degree coupled with 9+ years related experience; OR a High School diploma coupled with 12+ years related experience.
- Minimum of 3 years software or systems requirements analysis and design experience on enterprise level IT environments.
- A minimum of 3+ years Vmware enterprise level experience. Examples of enterprise experience may include: VMware HA or VMware Site Recovery Manager.
- Experience planning and leading VMware migrations.
- Experience designing the hardware layer for physical and virtual environments (servers and desktops) and engineering the virtual software layer (VMware’s vShpere, vCloud and View).
- Experience monitoring compute capacity and performance, identify performance optimizations (performance-based sizing) and plan capacity based on usage trends.
- Ability to lead architectural design discussions, obtain consensus among stakeholders and carry those designs through deployment and into operations.
- Ability to estimate level of effort and cost of engineering design.
