Job Description: SAIC’s Navy and Marine Corps Business Unit is seeking Senior System Safety Engineers to provide systems engineering analyses, technical services, and management support in King George, VA. The analyses, services, and management support will be in the project areas of system safety and risk assessment, including, but not limited, to weapon system safety, explosives safety, environmental safety, and related safety engineering in support of Navy and Marine Corps weapon acquisition programs. These efforts include safety risk assessment studies for a variety of ordnance and weapon related systems and operations and in various aspects of system, explosives, and environmental safety.

This is a senior level position requiring little supervision to provide systems safety engineering analysis, and technical and management support services in the areas of system safety (including hardware, software, personnel, environmental, and explosives), risk assessment, systems engineering, and vulnerability assessment of Navy, Marine Corps, and other joint/international weapon systems. This work includes safety risk assessments for a variety of combat and weapon related systems and operations in various acquisition life cycle phases. The candidate shall perform weapon system safety studies, analyses, investigations, audits, project management, and project management support—leading the SAIC Safety Team in completion of projects to determine and communicate the level of risk associated with systems. The studies, analyses, and investigations will include analysis or reviews of historical data, system designs, processes, procedures, equipment, interfaces, environments and other relevant system data to determine the potential for mishap or programmatic safety risk as appropriate for the program and lifecycle phase.

Some of the specific job functions include:

- Serve as a team lead for the SAIC system safety engineers

- Conduct or review safety assessments of new, updated, and/or modified combat and weapon system hardware and software, waivers, and exemption requests

- Assess system test documentation for incorporation of safety related testing to verify safety requirements.

- Perform operational analyses and studies to identify potential deficiencies in weapon operating procedures, ordnance handling procedures, stowage or other logistics phases involving ordnance, safety procedures, etc. and make specific recommendations for their resolution.

- Providing expert technical assistance in the preparation of document text, expert technical review of documents, review, correlation and adjudication of comments received on technical documents, and preparation of final drafts of these documents for publication.

Education:

- A Bachelor’s of Science (BS) degree from an accredited college or university in an engineering, scientific, business, or technical discipline OR US Naval operational experience at the E7 level or higher.

Critical Competencies:

- Ten (10) years of professional or operational experience in systems engineering for DoD weapon system programs.

- Five (5) years of qualified experience as a Senior System Safety Engineer in DoD system engineering processes in performing tasks focused on the development of system safety analysis by identifying, documenting, and tracking resolutions of safety anomalies.

- Experience in coordinating, developing, and executing comprehensive technical data packages, Safety Assessment Reports, Preliminary Hazard List, Preliminary Hazard Analysis, Subsystem Hazard Analysis, System Hazard Analysis, Operating and Support Hazard Analysis, Health Hazard Assessment, System Requirement Hazard Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis.

- Experience in the development and coordination of presentations; to support the Weapon System Explosives Safety Review Board and its Technical Panels, Laser Safety Review Board, and the Department of Defense and the Department of Navy Insensitive Munitions Reviews.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

- Knowledge of the DoD acquisition process, as defined in DoD 5000.02

- Knowledge of the DoD System Safety Engineering Process, as defined in MIL-STD 882E

- Knowledge of the Navy’s WSESRB and Technical Review Panel processes, as defined in NAVSEAINST 8020.6E

- Excellent communication and computer skills; MS Office®, specifically Word®, Excel®, and PowerPoint®.

- Possess strong interpersonal, presentation, verbal, and writing skills.

- Have a high order of analytical ability and a practical and theoretical knowledge of the functions, processes, and principles of management.
